Lanimer Queen 2008Sarah Smith (Robert Owen Memorial Primary School)
11 year-old Sarah Smith was chosen by her peers at The Robert Owen Memorial Primary School to be Lanimer Queen for 2008. This is not her first experience of participating in the Lanimers, as she has been involved in entries from her school and, earlier in her life, the Mother and Toddlers group at the Memorial Hall. Sarah is an active young lady who loves swimming and cycling. Her favourite sport, since she was six, is gymnastics. As a member of the YMCA Display Team based in Lanark she has travelled extensively to represent her club, culminating in a trip to Austria last year, where she represented Great Britain. Sarah has an older brother, Gary, who has also taken part in Lanimer entries in the past. He and his mother, Janet, are looking forward to Sarah's 'big week' and have been helping her to plan for the events in which she will take part. Janet's partner Graham, family and friends, have all been caught up in the spirit of Lanimers, and have been busy creating characters for Sarah's garden display. Even the family's pet cat, Sonic, has seemed excited by the new activity around the house. Sarah has chosen a dress with classic style and simple lines to suit her slim, athletic figure. She will attend all the main events of Lanimer Week and, in addition to her principal role on Lanimer Day, is looking forward particularly to the Lanimer Ball, and to receiving the traditional Quaich at New Lanark. We are sure you will want to join with us in wishing Sarah a very happy Lanimer Week which will give her memories to cherish in the years to come.
