The Other Ladies 2009

Nessie Carswell, a much-respected Lanarkian and keen Lanimer supporter, will sash the Lord Cornet on Marches Night. An LGS former pupil she took part in several Lanimers while at school. She has a daughter and granddaughter living in London, and a teenage grandson in Yorkshire who loves coming to the Lanimers. Nessie is best known, perhaps, for teaching and demonstrating flower-arranging. As Nessie Findlater her flower shop donated the Lanimer Queen's circlet and bouquet for several years. For many years she arranged the flowers for the Lord Cornet's Reception.

Nessie is a member of St Nicholas Congregation Board, arranges the church flowers each week, works with a flower group which she formed, and fund-raises for the church. She is a past President of the Church Guild, Trefoil Guild, the Floral Art Club, and is a volunteer and Board Member of the Cargill Club. Proud to have been chosen to sash Lord Cornet Kenny Lean, Nessie will be watched by family and friends, at her usual spot close to the Stand. Enjoy the Moment and the memories, Nessie!

Janet Downie, proud wife of the Lord Comets' Club President, Leslie Downie, has the honour of Pinning the Badge on Lord Cornet, Kenny Lean. This Lanarkian has taken part in many local activities over the years. As a child she was in many Lanimer entries and her daughters followed in her footsteps. Janet was a Brownie and Guide Leader so Vikki and Ruth were regularly with Freda and Friends (originally the 'Brownie and Guide' entry). For many years she was also a member of Lanark Panto Club.

A housewife and mother working part-time, Janet enjoys taking her younger daughter, Ruth, to Highland Dancing competitions. With husband Leslie she has enjoyed representing Lanark at many Border Town events, where they have both made many new friends. We hope this year will bring many more happy Lanimer memories for Janet, in this, another special year for her family.

Hazel Lean is the Lord Cornet's wife. A Lanarkian, she works in the Lanark Administration Office for the Scottish Society of Autism, and is a member of St Nicholas Church. She and Kenny's two children attend Lanark Primary School. Kirsten (9) is a member of Lanark Junior Panto Club and Dancerite School of Dance. Murray (5), a keen rugby player, trains at Biggar RFC where his dad helps coach him. Both children are already experienced Lanimer participants, like their mum.

Hazel started with St Kentigern's Sunday School entries and more recently the Kranal Club, her costumes ranging from Can-Can dancer to green-faced witch. Her companion for Lanimer Week 2009 will be her sister, Jennifer, whose husband, Alistair, will be supporting Kenny. On hand, too, will be Hazel's parents, Jim and Christine Buchanan. Both families are very much looking forward to the Lanimer celebrations.
