Crowning Lady 2010

Marjorie Romer

Marjorie Romer is 'over the moon' to be this year's Crowning Lady. An LGS pupil from 1951 to 1955 she is the wife of Ex-Lord Cornet of 1986, Ernest Romer. She worked for Miss Dickson and Mrs Stark before and after her marriage. Her 1972 Royal Burgh of Lanark Burgess Ticket and presentation to Queen Elizabeth II in 2000, at New Lanark were high points in her life. We suspect her Lanimer role this year is now 'up there'!

A member of St Nicholas Church Choir and Church Guild Marjorie is also a 'weel kent face' in New Lanark, where she has worked for 21 years, 15 in the Village Store' (in which role she met the Queen).

Marjorie's Lanimer career began with Mrs Elizabeth Romer's entries between 1959 and 1962. She was one of the '78 (High Street) Club' from 1963 to 1969, then came St Kentigern's entries from 1975 to 1989. Her children Ernest, Gillian and Andrew were regular participants. Andrew was a Yeoman in the 1980 Lanimer Court. More recently her grandson, Steven Gardiner was First Lord. Less well-known in her personal life was her fostering of 7 children between 1965 and 1972. She wonders often where the children of these years are now.

A smile and a laugh come easily to Marjorie so we know what to expect when she and her companion for Lanimer Week, her daughter, Gillian, are 'on duty'. This is one lady who will know just how to celebrate the honour bestowed on her. We all wish her, Ernest and all of their family, a truly fantastic Lanimer Week.
