The Enthusiasm of Past Years

The Enthusiasm of Past Years - Lanimer Day 1897
Mary Allan Martin Lightbody, aged 14, was Lanimer Queen from Lanark Grammar School in 1913 and was crowned outside the Co-operative store in High Street. She was a sister of Mrs D. Watt Little of Wheatfield, and of Andrew Lightbody, 3 Wheatland Drive, who was in his sister's Guard of Honour. The two Principal maids are now Mrs J. Orr and Mrs W. Hutton.

Part of the entertainment of by-gone days was a greasy pole. It was erected at the top of High Street and had suspended from the top a leg of lamb and anyone succeeding in climbing this hazard and retrieving the prize was allowed to keep it. The greasy pole slid out of use before the Queen's Procession began in 1893.
