Joe, a nurseryman and poultry keeper is the third son of an old Lanark family who have been particularly diligent in Lanimer affairs. He himself has twenty years connection with the Lanimer committee, six of them as sports vice-convenor, and he has ridden the Marches since 1951, winning both the Burgh Spurs and the Bottle o' Brandy in I960.

Joe is married, Gloria his wife being a past rider, and they have two children, Colin aged 15 and Allan aged II who are following their father's tradition as riders.
