Death Of Former Cornet Jimmy Barrie

One of Lanark's most popular Ex-Lord Cornets and one of its few surviving Baillies, James T. 'Jimmy' Barrie, died last week.

Born in Lanark's Castlegate, on leaving school, he worked at Oakwood for a time before joining the army on the outbreak of World War 2 during which he served as a lorry driver in South Africa, before returning to Britain as a Staff Quartermaster Sergeant, first in Doncaster and then in Douglas.

It was while he was there that he first met Nan, a young ATS Staff Sergeant, and they were eventually married in 1947.

After the war, Jimmy had returned to Lanark, first working as a civilian storeman at Winston Barracks, later joining the Post Office, working as a postman until his eventual retiral in 1986.

Very much a stalwart of Lanark community life, he was elected Lord Cornet in 1967 and served as a Labour Town Councillor and was Senior Baillie when the Town Council was eventually disbanded.

He was also a member of the Guildry of Lanark and the Lanimer Committee, and he was an active member of St Kentigerns Church.

Jimmy also threw his enthusiasm into Lanark Thistle Bowling Club where he worked for a number of years after his retiral. He was also a great reader who was never away from the library.

He was predeceased recently by his wife but is survived by his daughter, grand-daughter and great-grandson.

His funeral service at Greyfriars Church on Monday was well attended by his many friends and associates.
