Lord Cornet Elect 2006 Selected

Kenny Douglas is next Cornet

It's a case of 'youth at the helm' - or, rather, at the reins - in the choice of the 2006 Lanark Lord Cornet, Kenny Douglas.

Born in Douglas and a Lanark resident for almost 20 years, at 34 years old, Kenny will be one of the youngest cornets of recent times. Indeed, he recently joined the Royal Burgh of Lanark Community Council to almost immediately be made a member of its new sub-committee on youth issues in the town.

He brought some pedigree to this role, having been very active in youth work in the town since he was, himself, a youngster. Following helping form the former Feedback Music Productions, he was instrumental in setting up the Lanark ICE Theatre Group, giving young performers their first chance on stage and has helped build that company up over the past several years to be one of the most respected of its kind in the county.

Despite his age, he already has 18 seasons in the cast of Lanark Panto under his belt.

Kenny has also worked hard in the successful establishment of Lanark's South Lanarkshire Council-founded Lanark Universal Connections youth club and is now based with the club's 'sister' establishment in East Kilbride; he is fitting in part-time studies towards a BA in Community Education at Strathclyde University to add to his earlier HND from Bell College.

Kenny spent several years of his youth in Saudi Arabia, where his dad was working, before attending Lanark Grammar.

His dad hailed from Ponfeich but his mum has deep Lanark connections as a Diplacito. He said his only worry so far was learning how to ride a horse. ''I don't think I've ever been on one in my life! I asked if I could use a motorbike on Lanimer Day but! it seems that's a no-no!" he said.

At least he won't have to travel far to carry out his traditional duties in the town centre on Thursday, June 8 as Kenny lives in the High Street.

Kenny is elected Lanark's new Lord Cornet

Lanark youth worker Kenny Douglas is to be Lanark's 2006 Lord Cornet.

His appointment as the town's Standard Bearer-elect was announced earlier this week.

Although born in Douglas 34 years ago, Kenny has lived in Lanark for almost 20 years.

Part of his early youth was spent in Saudia Arabia, where his father was working, before Kenny returned to Scotland for schooling at Lanark Grammar.

He is best known in the town for his youth work, and helped set up the ICE theatre group, which serves young people not just from Lanark but the surrounding areas.

He is currently the group's chairman and director.

His initial work in helping with a youth centre at Lanark Grammar was followed by involvement in setting up South Lanarkshire Council's Universal Connections in the town. He is also a member of Style, an umbrella organisation for Lanark youth.

A long-time member of Lanark Panto Club, he has appeared both on stage and behind the scenes as director.

He has also joined Lanark Amateur Musical Society and will direct their new show, Hello Dolly, in March.

Kenny works for South Lanarkshire Council's Universal Connections in East Kilbride, and is also studying part-time for a BA in Community Education at Strathclyde University.

Living in the town's High Street means he has had a good view of Lanimers, although this year the view will certainly be different.

He has also taken part in Lanark's famous procession in the past, usually dressed as a woman in the Crazy Gang's lorry, only this year he will be taking a more conservative role, leading the procession on horseback at town's Standard Bearer.
