Crowning Lady 2006 SelectedJan will crown this year's Lanimer Queen
Jan, of Wallace Court, Lanark, told the Gazette on Monday that, after she got over the initial shock of being asked to fill the important role the day before, she readily accepted what she called "a great honour. In fact, it's magic!" She said that it was all the greater an honour for the fact her family has a long Lanark heritage. She said that generations of the family had supported the Lanimers and that tradition was being carried on by her daughters, who have been involved in helping with Procession entries for years. Indeed, Jan's elder daughter, Jane, is to be her Companion. Jan is a Lanimer Committee stalwart and is a leading member of several other Burgh organisations and groups. Of course, the last time a Kirkhope played such a prominent part in the Lanimers was when her husband Robert was Lord Cornet in 1965. Reflecting that this was 41 years ago, Jan loyally commented: "Of course, he was the first Boy Cornet..." Robert also served as Lanimer Committee Chairman. Meanwhile, following on last week's selection of Lanimer Queen-elect Melissa Reid of Lanark Grammar and her female court members from that school plus the Lanark Primary members, three further schools have named theirs this week. At St Mary's Primary, Ladies in Waiting chosen are Colette McCann of Forsyth Court and Holly Paton of Lockhart Drive and Sword Bearer Craig Bustard of Woodstock Avenue. At Kirkfieldbank Primary Ladies in Waiting chosen are Chloe Robertson of Hagholm Road, Cleghorn and Vikkie Mitchell of Lynn Crescent, Kirkfieldbank with Yeomen of the Guard Daryl Valentine of Rhyber Avenue, Lanark and David Gracie, Lesmahagow Road, Kirkfieldbank. Ladies in Waiting from New Lanark Primary will be Alison Harwood of New Lanark Road and Megan Denholm of Braxfield Road along with Sceptre Bearer Robert Wilson of Smyllum Road. At time of going to press Robert Owen Primary had yet to name its court members and Lanark Grammar was still choosing its male court members. Lanark Gazette |
