Lanark Swimming Club stalwart Karen Kelly has been chosen to sash this year's Lord Cornet Kenny Douglas.

"I was really surprised," said Karen this week. "I was taken aback. But I was honoured."

Karen, of Rhyber Avenue, Lanark, has appeared on Lanimer lorries with the primary school as a child, then with the YMCA, and in recent years helping with Freda Parlett's lorry. An active member of St Nicholas Church, she served on the Congregational Board and is treasurer of the Saturday tearoom, which raises funds.

But away from work - with the Clydesdale Bank in Wishaw - Karen is better known for her dedication to the swimming club. She has been coaching for 27 years, and takes an exhausting schedule of sessions each week, even without the early rises to travel to competitions!

Her abilities have been recognised nationally too, and she has been the team manager's assistant for the Commonwealth Games, and for three years was Scottish elite squad team manager, travelling to Hong Kong, Shanghai, France and Italy with various squads.
