Lord Cornet Elect 2007 SelectedBrian Will Be Lord CornetLanark's next Lord Cornet will be local auctioneer Brian Ross. And the equestrian side of things holds no fear for Brian - he has been riding since he was a boy and for decades has worked with the youngsters in Lanark and Upperward Pony Club. He is assistant vice-chairman of the club, and has been coaching for around 20 years. Brian (46) actually began his riding career as an outrider in the 1974 Lanimer procession. "That is how it all started," he said. "That is how I got involved and it went on from there." He has ridden in the Lanimer events since the 1970s, and has also taken part in rides at Sanquhar, Peebles and Biggar. "I am looking forward to that side of it, going to the Common Ridings and the Border rides," he said this week. Lanimer representatives called at his home in Hardacres on Sunday, and Brian was happy to accept the invitation to be the Burgh's next standard bearer. "I was taken aback a bit," he said. "But when you have been born and bred in the town, educated in the town and worked in the town, being cornet holds something for you." Brian, who has worked for Lawrie and Symington for 28 years now, is married to Katrina and they have two daughters Katie (13) and Allyson, who is coming up for 10 years old. Both already ride in the Lanimers, and are looking forward to supporting their father when he rides down to the cross on Monday, June 4, to be installed as the 2007 Lord Cornet. Lanark Gazette Brian Sets Standard As Lanimer's Lord CornetThe countdown to Lanark's Lanimers began at the weekend with the announcement local auctioneer Brian Ross has been selected as the next Lord Cornet. The town's new standard bearer was taken aback - but he was extremely delighted - when members of the selection committee asked him on Sunday to take on the role in the traditional annual event. And Brian already has a head start over many of his predecessors for whom horse riding was an alien world. Brian (46), has been riding since he was a boy and has over 30 years' experience of riding in Lanimers and Common Riding events. Born and bred and educated in Lanark, Brian and his wife Katrina have two daughters, Katie (13), and Allyson (9). Both girls have already ridden with their father in previous Lanimer events and are looking forward to riding in support of their dad in June. Brian, who has been an auctioneer with Lawrie and Symington for 28 years, lives in Hardacres. His first Lanimers on horseback was the 1974 procession when he was an outrider. Since then he has taken part in countless Lanimer equestrian events. He has also taken part in Common Riding events at Sanquhar, Biggar and Peebles in the past and is looking forward to visiting various Border Common Ridings this year as the Royal Burgh's official representative. Brian has passed his equestrian knowledge to local youngsters through Lanark and Upperward Pony Club. He has coached members in mounted games for 20 years and is assistant vice-chairman.
