He was born into a family already at the heart of the Royal Burgh's public life, his father, also Thomas, being a leading local lawyer and churchman. He lost his mother - the Lanimer Queen of 1901 - at an early age and, after being educated at Edinburgh Academy and University, joined his father's law firm, Davidson and Shirley. He would also, in 1960, follow his father in becoming a Lord Cornet, a tradition carried on into a third generation by his son Bill. Excused war service on medical grounds, Thomas carried on serving the Lanark community on the 'home front' and meeting a serving WREN from Carmichael, Linda, who went on to become his wife of 56 years. Thomas Tennant had a lifelong enthusiasm for bridge, the welfare of animals and for farming but it is for his many positions in Lanark's voluntary organisations and institutions he will be best remembered. At various times he was captain of Lanark Cricket Club, a prominent member of Lanark Rugby Football Club, Toastmasters and Guildry. He was a Past President of the Rotary Club of Lanark and served for 27 years as Session Clerk of Lanark's St Kentigerns Church. He was also an elder of that church from 1955. The family lived, at various times, at Hope Street, The Grange and Scarlettmuir. Thanks to the loving care of his wife, he was able to stay at home for many years after a serious stroke 18 years ago. Latterly he was in Woodhurst Nursing Home, Carluke and died at Wishaw General Hospital. His funeral service last week at Greyfriars Church was very well attended. He is survived by this wife, four children and seven grandchildren. Lanark Gazette |
