Lord Cornet Elect 2008 Selected

John's New Lord Cornet

This years Lord Cornet is to be John Dickman, a popular man known throughout Lanark, particularly in musical circles.

And his selection will leave one Lanark band short of a piper, throughout Lanimer Week!

The choice was made on Sunday and John (53) was stunned when Lanimer representatives turned up at his home in Newlands Street.

"I am shocked, shell-shocked," he said on Monday.

"It is just beginning to sink in. I am really over the moon about it, but I was shell-shocked when they arrived.

"I am looking forward to the whole thing, although riding the horses will be a bit of a new thing to me."

John was born in Motherwell and moved to Lanark when he was 17.

At that time he worked in Ravenscraig Steelworks, but when he was 25 he left and joined Strathclyde Police. He served as an officer in Motherwell, Glasgow, Coatbridge and Wishaw before returning to Motherwell where he finished his career in the Police in 2006. He is now a member of the police civilian staff in Glasgow.

John had been heavily involved in the Boy's Brigade in Motherwell and when he came to Lanark he became an officer in 1st Lanark Boy's Brigade. Since coming to Lanark he has also been involved with Lanark and District Pipe Band, Lanark Amateur Musical Society, Lanark Lanimers Bands Committee, Music in Lanark and the Guildry.

He is an eider in Greyfriars Church, a member of the church choir and involved with the Kilninnie Club. He also sings in a small folk band and has great fun entertaining at church Guild nights and local charity nights.

John and his wife May have a daughter Alison and a son Gavin who, like his father, plays the pipes.

John will be Sashed as Lord Cornet at Lanark Cross on Monday, June 9.

Piper John Bags Post of Cornet

Lanark man John Dickman is a familiar sight in the town on Lanimer Day - proudly marching in the annual procession as a piper with the award-winning Lanark and District Pipe Band.

This June, however, he is set to see Lanimers from a totally new perspective.

For he will be the Royal Burgh of Lanark's new Standard Bearer.

And this week John, who is a former policeman, was completely stunned when he was asked to be the town's new Lord Cornet.

"I was shocked when they asked me, absolutely shell-shocked," he told the Advertiser.

John (53), admitted he was still getting over the shock - but he was delighted and "over the moon" at the tremendous honour bestowed on him.

"I am looking forward to the whole occasion, although riding the horses will be a bit of a new thing for me," he admitted.

Married with a son and daughter, he was born in Motherwell and was educated at Knowetop Primary School and Dalziel High School.

He moved to Lanark at the age of 17, and at this time worked in Ravenscraig Steelworks.

He had been heavily involved in the Boys' Brigade in Motherwell when he came to Lanark and so became an Officer in the 1st Lanark Boys' Brigade.

John left the steelworks at the age of 25 and joined Strathclyde Police. He served in Motherwell, Glasgow, Coatbridge and Wishaw before returning to Motherwell where he finished his police career in 2006.

Since coming to Lanark he has been involved with Lanark and District Pipe Band, Lanark Amateur Musical Society, Lanark Lanimers Bands Committee, and Music in Lanark. He is also a member of the Guildry of Lanark.

John is also an elder at Greyfriars Church, a member of their church choir and involved with the town's Kilninnie Club.

When he is not piping John sings in a small folk band and has great fun entertaining at church guild nights and local charity nights.

Since retiring as a police officer, he has taken on a new post as a civilian administration officer with Strathclyde Police.
