Lanimer Queen Elect 2008 SelectedSarah's still in shock! The schoolgirl who will be crowned as Lanark Lanimer Queen this year is 11-year-old Sarah Smith. Sarah was chosen by school-friends at Robert Owen Memorial Primary on Monday, and is now looking forward to her big day on Thursday June 12. "I am just in a bit of a shock at the moment, and Sarah is in shock as well," said her mother Janet. "She cannot believe it. I think it will take a wee while to sink in." Sarah, who has an older brother Gary (19) has some experience of the Lanimer celebrations over the years: in her younger days she appeared in a procession entry from Robert Owen, and from the Mother and Toddlers Group at the Memorial Hall in the past. Her favourite activity, however, is gymnastics, and she has been a member of the display team based at Lanark YMCA for years. "She is very active in that," said her mother. "They travel about quite a lot, to London, Manchester and Liverpool. "She was in Austria last July. She really enjoys that. "It is quite a good social thing for her." Members of the court chosen from Robert Owen were: Queen Sarah Smith; Chief Maids Alexandra Frame, Hannah Wilson; Ladies in Waiting Emma Campbell, Shannon Crombie; Crown Bearer Stuart Mitchell; Herald Graeme Haynes; Page Boys Calvin Stuart, Nathan Thomson. Other schools were choosing their representatives as the Gazette went to press. Lanark Gazette Sarah can't wait to be Lanimer QueenLanark's Lanimer Queen for 2008 is to be local schoolgirl Sarah Smith. The 11-year-old pupil from the town's Robert Owen Memorial Primary was elected by fellow pupils earlier this week. Now she is eagerly awaiting her big day in June, when, in front of the whole town, she is crowned Lanimer Queen, continuing a custom that has gone on for just over 100 years. Sarah has already taken part in Lanimers before, so knows what to expect during the big day which will take place on June 12. She has appeared with the floats entered for the Lanimer Day procession by her own school and by the Mothers and Toddlers Group at the Memorial Hall. A keen gymnast, Sarah has been a member of the Lanark YMCA display team for several years, and as a result travels extensively to competitions and displays. Past events she has competed in have ranged from venues in London, Manchester and Liverpool plus even Austria. Sarah's election by her fellow pupils signalled the start of Lanimer election fever in the town with elections now taking place the remaining court members from primaries at St Mary's, Lanark, New Lanark and Kirkfieldbank and also from Lanark Grammar.
