Nessie will sash the Cornet

The lady who will sash this year's Lord Cornet is Mrs Nessie Carswell - although she is better known in Lanark as Nessie Findlater.

"I'm just thrilled to bits" said Nessie this week. "I am absolutely delighted to do it."

She has been a Lanimer enthusiast all her life, from her time as a schoolgirl taking part in the procession.

She married George Findlater, whose family owned Jerviswood, and they used to meet the Cornet's party at Leechford when the Perambulation of the Marches crossed the land each year.

Later, when she ran a florist's business, she used to give the Lanimer Queen's bouquet and head-dress and has also arranged the flowers for the Cornet's reception.

"I have been interested in Lanimers always," she said. "That's why it's such a thrill."

Following George's death, Nessie married Jim Carswell, but was then widowed again.

However, she keeps busy in the community. She is well known in Lanark for her skill with flowers.

A past president of the Floral Art Club, she frequently is asked to provide displays for weddings and events.

She is a member of St Nicholas Congregational Board, a past president of the Guild and a past president of Lanark Trefoil Guild.

Nessie is also on the Board of Management for the Cargill Club, where she carries out voluntary work.

She will sash Kenny Lean at the Cross, on Monday, June 9.

Sashing honour falls to Nessie

A woman with a long history of supporting Lanimers is to sash this year's Lanark Lord Cornet, Kenny Lean.

Mrs Nessie Carswell started her Lanimer involvement as a child taking part in the annual procession.

After she married George Findlater, whose family formerly owned Jerviswood. The couple used to meet the Cornet's party at Leechford during the Perambulation of the Marches.

As a florist in the town she also provided flowers for the Lanimer Queen, and for the Cornet's reception.

Following the death of her husband she re-married, but was widowed again.

She is a past president of the town's floral art club, a member of St Nicholas Congregational Board, a past president of Lanark Trefoil Guild, and sits on the Cargill Club board of management.
