Crowning Lady 2010 Selected

Crowning delight

The popular choice for this year's Lanimer Crowning Lady is Marjorie Romer.

And, although her family name has been closely linked to the Lanimers and Lanark traditions for decades, when Marjorie mounts the crowning stand on June 10 this year, it will only be the second time in her 71 years that she has ever done so!

Indeed, the last time was way back at the first proper Lanimers after World War 2 in 1946 when she was "a wee Rainbow Fairy" in her dance class's Procession entry.

She said the news had cheered her up no end, having been in plaster since breaking her ankle two weeks ago.

And the lady who will be expected to ascend the wooden mountain of steps on the Lanimer stand did so - by slipping on the stairs at home in Hospitland Drive!

"Actually, I remember feeling giddy the last time I was up the top of that podium. But that was back in 1946 when I was a wee girl, so I should be alright this year. After all, I'm a wee bit older now..."

She's got many Lanimer connections - even the stand is in the family, joiner husband Ernie, Lord Cornet in 1986, having been in charge of erecting it for many years!

Marjorie was born in Newarthill before moving to Forth, where she attended primary school before going on to Lanark Grammar.

She and Ernie celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary later this year, having raised three children.

Marjorie works part-time at the New Lanark Visitor Centre's cafe. Both she and Ernie were accorded the honour of being made Burgesses of the Royal Burgh of Lanark for their services to the town.

Ernie's mother Bessie Romer was Crowning Lady in 1976. So Marjorie will be following in a long and honourable family tradition as she mounts the stand.

But take care on these stairs, Marjorie!
